Sarah Hamill, Director of Communications at the Austin Humane Society, explained how Rags to Wags fuels the organization’s mission: the generosity of Austinites helps raise around $800,000 in a single night. Those funds ensure that dogs, cats, and other animals receive care, shelter, and a second chance at life — all year long. 

Despite national trends showing adoption rates declining — often due to factors like rising housing and veterinary costs — the Humane Society is doubling down on resources to keep animals healthy, happy, and adoptable. Their on-site care, training, and educational materials help ensure that every adoption is a forever home, not a temporary placement.

One of the most moving moments of the evening came from volunteer and recent adopter Felicia, who shared the story of her dog Grover — a pup she once trained at the shelter before choosing to adopt him herself. Stories like these demonstrate the deeply personal, human-animal bond that drives so many in Austin to get involved and make a difference.
